Durham Wedding Photographer

Durham is perfect if you are looking for an historic venue, a countryside venue, or a mixture of both. Although there are modern hotels and bars for more contemporary venues, Durham is famous for its history.

Sitting to the east of the Durham dales, there are also plenty of wedding venues with stunning countryside views and beautiful gardens.

I have been photographing weddings in and around Durham since I moved to the county in 2011. I have linked to a few Durham weddings at some of my favourite venues.

I have now moved down to York, but I regularly visit Durham and I'm still available to photograph weddings throughout the county.

Calling introverts of Durham!

Weddings can be wonderful. But, they can also be a bit overwhelming... especially if you are receiving wedding planning advice from an extrovert!

But it doesn't need to be that way - if you want a quiet celebration with a few close family and friends, do it! If you want a big laid back party where the plan is to just relax, eat food, drink, and have a great time - you can plan it that way! If there are traditions you don;t like... don't do them!

And wedding photography is the same - you don't have to have a full on photo shoot in the middle of your day. You don't even need to have any posed photos! You can have beautiful wedding photos which capture the whole day, and retell your story without feeling like a poser.

Happy Otter Photography was built for introverts. I understand the value of the thinkers, the quiet people, the often mislabeled shy ones. I know you have a good time when you are relaxed and around the people you love - so I capture that on camera. I won't put you in awkward situations that you don't enjoy - it's your wedding day! Don't do anything you don't want to!

OK, I realise the photos below are all posed... but take a look at my portfolio... you'll see that you don;t need to pose to have beautiful portraits a captured moments.

Durham Castle Wedding Photos-44.jpg

Durham Castle Wedding Photos

One of Durham's most famous and impressive buildings, located off the palace green near the famous cathedral. How many people can say they hosted their wedding at a UNESCO world heritage site? Not many, and even fewer because the castle is home to Durham university students during term time, so weddings are only possible here during the summer months. Members of the public have to pay to get in! This limited time window gives a sense of exclusivity.
I can personally vouch for the absolutely fantastic food! If you want to wow and impress your guests with somewhere grand, historic, interesting and full of character.... Durham Castle is a perfect wedding venue!

Perfectly located to get all the benefits of the city, including transport links and hotels, this secluded medieval house and gardens is an absolutely fantastic venue. So many interesting areas for guests to explore, and stunning backdrops for photos, this is one of the oldest inhabited houses in Durham.
Being lived in and run by a family gives weddings held here a really unique feel void of any of the generic wedding fluff you may find at a more commercial venue.
As the house and gardens are open to the public year round - the garden will be impressive no matter what season you choose for your wedding.
From inside and out there are views of the cathedral to impress further any history geeks you may have as guests.

Durham Registry Office-40.jpg

Durham Registry Office Photos

The registry office in Durham is called Aykley Heads House and is over a mile from the city centre. This makes it a much easier for guests that a city centre registry office with no parking.
Aykley Heads house has plenty of parking, and being a large yellow building makes it much more photogenic than some other city centre registry offices!
The ceremony rooms are bright and elegant, and there are some lovely gardens if you have time for photos.
